Case #1 Noah Homes: Memory Care Homes

Case Study Noah Homes Memory Care Homes. (2019).

The Noah Homes were designed by the architectural and planning firm Dahlin Group. Noah Homes are two memory care communities currently located in San Diego Spring Valley, CA. Each home is approximately 5,000 sq.ft. and they were both completed in January 2017. The communities incorporated features that help residents with memory issues and were designed to improve resident’s quality of life (Dahlingroup, 2019).

An interesting feature of these communities is their wayfinding system. The colors used in the design help direct residents to the different environments. The designers used contrasting hues to distinguish between the different areas. For example, they used a violet color for the community living space, yellow for kitchen and the laundry areas, blue for staff hydrotherapy and medicine, and green for bedrooms (Noha Homes, 2019).

Each community has two single rooms and four double occupancy bedrooms that are ADA accessible. The design included a memory box and personal spaces that can be easily changed and personalized. The rooms are spacious and include a personal desk, a closet, and beautiful landscape views. The main common areas included are the California Room, The Great Room, and the Dining Room (Noha Homes, 2019).

Sustainability is another important consideration. Sustainable features were incorporated into the Noah Homes. The homes meet California’s energy efficiency standards and incorporate the state of the art technology to address sustainability. Each home features natural landscaping, LEED lighting, solar energy, double-tinted Milgard windows, insulated exterior doors, natural lighting, and energy Star appliances (Noha Homes, 2019).

Lastly, the community adapted residential elements to make residents feel at home. The spaces were designed to create an experience not only in the inside but the outside. High ceilings that connect to other living areas, glass doors, and courtyard areas are some “residential feel” elements incorporated in the design. However, the communities include other features to accommodate people in need of memory care.

For example, motion sensors were included in case residents forget to turn off the lights and pathways that do not terminate in 90-degree directional changes to ensure residence’s safety and to avoid confusion. Additionally, the communities included silent alarms and other medical features hidden to create safe and clean beautiful spaces (Noha Homes, 2019).

Case #2 Cedar Hill Assisted Living and Memory Care

The Village at Cedar Hill. (2019).

The community was completed in 2015. Cedar Hill is a memory care and assisted living community designed by Mackenzie Architects. The community is 46,200 sqft with two stories of memory care units and senior living apartments. The firm’s main goal was to maximize seniors’ personal potential and enable them to live independently (Mackenzie, 2019).

The community offers private and shared spaces for the staff and residents. Private rooms are in the perimeter of the home and the common areas are centralized. The common areas include living room areas, dining, and a family kitchen. The shared spaces allow residents to eat dinner with other residents and spend time in living room areas while they interact with the other residents. The floor plan is mainly divided into two parts. Service areas, storage, and the laundry room are located on the left side of the plan while most of the spaces used by residents are on the right side. Other innovative details include a fire place where residents can enjoy time relaxing, a patio with beautiful exterior views, a fitness center, and areas for crafting (The Village at Cedar Hill, 2019).

Case #3 Senior Living Apartments

Elk Grove. Carlton Senior Living. (2019).

Carlton Senior Living Elk Grove’s apartments provide assisted living, memory care and independent living in Northern California. It was designed by Architect-LPAS Architecture + Design and completed in 2012. The community is 110,000 sqft and it features 100 independent and assisted living apartments. The main purpose was to create a space where residents feel as comfortable as possible and fulfill their needs. Therefore, the community has a separate and secure dementia care wing that features a private courtyard. The wing can house and assist 36 seniors in need of specialized memory care (LPAS Architecture Design Archives, 2019).

Common areas are important because they provide opportunities for the residents to release their stress and do different activities while it also encourage them to have an active lifestyle. Also, by allowing the seniors to perform different activities they enhance cognition, behavior, physical abilities, and enable new social responses (Carlton Senior Living, 2019).

Carlton Senior Living Elk Grove offers many different spaces and activities for the residents to enjoy their stay at the community. An interesting space included in the community is a beauty salon. The community incorporates a salon for the residents where they can go to get their hair cut, styled, and colored easily in the beauty salon provided within the community (Carlton Senior Living, 2019).
